With Melbourne now its fastest growing city, sprawling suburbs of state capitals are Australia\u2019s new boom towns<\/p>\n\n<p>Demographer Mark McCrindle \u00a0outlined the scale and challenges of Australia\u2019s population growth:<\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cFor Sydney to grow \u2013 in less than a generation \u2013 from 1958 when it was two million, to now hit five is pretty phenomenal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPopulation growth is continually taking planners by surprise. We are sort of dealing with population growth we weren\u2019t planning on.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSydney is going to add a new Perth \u2013 two million people \u2013 to its population in the next 20 years. For Melbourne, [it\u2019s] a 100,000 increase every single year \u2026 that sort of growth requires some significant infrastructure injection.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">No shortage of space but is Australia\u2019s growth sustainable?<\/h2>\n\n<p>Australia\u2019s population reached\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2016\/feb\/15\/australian-population-to-hit-24-million-as-overseas-migration-drives-growth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">24 million last year<\/a>, with half of the annual growth driven by immigration (a lower proportion than in previous years). Its population is expected to hit 50m in 2086.<\/p>\n\n<p>The largest single origin country of immigrants in Australia remains the UK, with over\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.abs.gov.au\/ausstats\/abs@.nsf\/mf\/3412.0\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one million British-born people<\/a>\u00a0in the country.<\/p>\n\n<p>While its population density is less than 1,000th that of Shanghai, Australia actually has the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.footprintnetwork.org\/content\/documents\/ecological_footprint_nations\/ecological_per_capita.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">second highest per capita ecological footprint<\/a>\u00a0of any country (ecological footprint is a measure of how much natural resources are required to supply individuals needs and absorb the waste and emissions they produce). Australia is also the Earth\u2019s driest continent and the effects of global warming threaten\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ibtimes.com.au\/australia-face-water-crisis-due-rainfall-shortage-climate-change-1346971\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a water crisis\u00a0<\/a>by the end of the century, according to scientists.<\/p>\n\n<p><em>Population Matters believes that a decent standard of life for all and a healthy, biodiverse environment can only be achieved if population and consumption are in line with natural resources.
