Together, they would reduce CO2 emissions by 120 gigatons by 2050 \u2014 more than onshore and offshore\u00a0wind power combined.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"983\" src=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/drawdown_book_cover-768x983_0.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3937\" srcset=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/drawdown_book_cover-768x983_0.jpg 768w, https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/drawdown_book_cover-768x983_0-234x300.jpg 234w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p>\nCover of the Drawdown book<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cDrawdown\u201d is the point in time when greenhouse gas concentrations peak in the atmosphere and begin to go down on a year-to-year basis. The Drawdown project is an international effort, involving 70\u00a0research fellows\u00a0from 22 countries and six continents. The nonprofit organisation is a coalition of scholars, scientists and advocates from across the globe that is modeling, and communicating about a collective array of substantive solutions to global warming, with the goal of reaching drawdown.<\/p>\n\n<p>The report makes a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.drawdown.org\/solutions\/women-and-girls\/family-planning\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">simple case<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cCarbon footprints are a common topic. Addressing population\u2014how many feet are leaving their tracks\u2014remains controversial despite widespread agreement that greater numbers place more strain on the planet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHonoring the dignity of women and children through family planning is not about governments forcing the birth rate down (or up, through natalist policies). Nor is it about those in rich countries, where emissions are highest, telling people elsewhere to stop having children. When family planning focuses on healthcare provision and meeting women\u2019s expressed needs, empowerment, equality, and well-being are the result; the benefits to the planet are side effects.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p>About education for women and girls,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.drawdown.org\/solutions\/women-and-girls\/educating-girls\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">it says<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cEducation lays a foundation for vibrant lives for girls and women, their families, and their communities. It also is one of the most powerful levers available for avoiding emissions by curbing population growth.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p>The project has evaluated and ranked\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.drawdown.org\/solutions-summary-by-rank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">80 solutions<\/a>, including plant-based diets, solar farms and electric vehicles. \u00a0Among the criteria used in evaluation were whether the solution is currently available and its economic viability.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"275\" height=\"183\" src=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Commonwealth-flag.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3938\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Flag of the Commonwealth of Nations<\/p>\n\n<p>Drawdown has been appointed by the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth of Nations, Patricia Scotland, to collaborate with the Commonwealth on future research.
