Please join the campaign.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"512\" src=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Young-mother.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3832\" srcset=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Young-mother.png 768w, https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Young-mother-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p>In January 2017, the so-called \u2018global gag rule\u2019 was\u00a0reinstated by President Trump. The rule, which had been rescinded by President Obama when he entered office, means that the US government will not give any aid to organisations which provide abortion services or even provide clients with information about them. The impact of the rule extends beyond family planning to other health services, such as child and maternal health programmes and HIV prevention.<\/p>\n\n<p>The US is currently the world\u2019s largest funder of family planning services through overseas aid\u00a0and the move could lead to the withdrawal or redistribution of more than US$9bn of funding.<\/p>\n\n<p>According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, the cuts have affected a total of 1,275 NGOs and $2.2 billion of funding. Marie Stopes International has estimated that if they cannot close the funding gap resulting from the loss of US funding,\u00a0over 2 million women will lose access to the contraception services which they provided, leading to an additional:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>2.5 million unintended pregnancies<\/li>\n<li>870,000 unsafe abortions<\/li>\n<li>6,900 avoidable maternal deaths<\/li>\n<li>\u00a3107m increase in direct healthcare costs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Taking action<\/h2>\n\n<p>Population Matters is one of more than 230 organisations worldwide to support a statement backing the\u00a0She Decides\u00a0initiative.\u00a0We have also joined more than 400 development, social justice, women\u2019s rights and family planning organisations in signing a\u00a0joint statement condemning the reinstatement of the gag rule.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Please join the campaign to defend family planning:<\/h2>\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Support the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.shedecides.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">She Decides<\/a>\u00a0initiative.<\/li>\n<li>Ask your elected representative to push their governments to provide additional aid for family planning.\u00a0 If you are a UK citizen, you can use\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.writetothem.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">WriteToThem<\/a>\u00a0to identify and contact them.
