The evidence is clear: child deaths could exceed United Nations (UN) projections this century. Governments at the meeting have acknowledged that conflict and climate change are straining health systems \u2014 and that greater investment is urgently needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cLet there be no doubt that we should have deep concern about what&#8217;s happening in the future, particularly for children.\u201d<em>&nbsp;<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<cite>Fragile Futures author, Professor Peter Le Souef<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/resources\/fragile-futures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fragile Futures report<\/a> makes one thing crystal clear: as climate change accelerates and population patterns shift, the risks to children\u2019s lives are likely to grow, which is something the UN does not account for in their current projections. Population Matters has a small delegation in New York this week to present the findings of the report and engage decision makers, including two of the report\u2019s authors,&nbsp; Professor Peter Le Souef, a Paediatrician, and Dr Melinda Judge.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Image-22-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16112\" srcset=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Image-22-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Image-22-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Image-22-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Image-22-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Image-22.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Professor Peter Le Souef and Dr Melinda Judge at CPD58<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>These issues were echoed in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/joint-statement-at-the-58th-session-of-the-un-commission-on-population-and-development\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">joint CPD58 statement<\/a>, delivered by Sierra Leone on the first day on behalf of multiple countries, including the UK. It emphasised the urgent need for investment to achieve international health goals, and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) stated that: &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201c&#8230;allocating an additional $79 billion by 2030 to expand maternal health and family planning services could yield $660 billion in economic benefits by 2050\u2014preventing 400 million unplanned pregnancies.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Governments also warned that <em>\u201cconflicts and climate change are straining health systems.\u201d<\/em> Population Matters has also called for greater investment and political action on these issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What the Climate Crisis Means for Children\u2019s Health<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>On 8 April, we presented the Fragile Future findings. Representatives attended from the UNFPA, the National Statistical Office of Malawi, the Mexican National Citizen Council on Population, as well as delegates from the Asian-Pacific Resource &amp; Research Centre for Women <a href=\"https:\/\/arrow.org.my\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">(ARROW)<\/a> and the Ghanaian organisation <a href=\"https:\/\/norsaac.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Norsaac<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Image-26-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16114\" srcset=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Image-26-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Image-26-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Image-26-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Image-26-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Image-26.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Population Matters&#8217; Madeleine Hewitt with Mathilda Yineboma Ayamba, Power to You(th) National Coordinator at Norsaac<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We found an engaged audience, eager to discuss population and take forward the findings of the report. Dr Yasmeen Sabeeh Qazi, CEO of QZ Catalyst \u2013 an organisation working on family planning and health in Pakistan, commented:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cPopulation does matter. Let\u2019s start talking about it.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Joan Castro, Executive Vice President of <a href=\"https:\/\/pfpi.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PATH Foundation Philippines<\/a>, and Wendo Sahar, Executive Director of <a href=\"https:\/\/dandelionafrica.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dandelion Africa<\/a> in Kenya, also shared their evidence in powerful video contributions, offering compelling insights from their work with local communities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cDespite their minimum contribution to climate change, newborns and children bear 88% of the disease burden linked to climate change.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<cite>Wendo Sahar<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignfull has-blue-background-color has-background is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Watch the side event back<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Fragile Futures: The Hidden Scale of Child Mortality\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/I5GqL6Czphc?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/populationmatters.org\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Our Chief Research and Operations Officer, Josh Hill, observed: <em>\u201cThe intersection of population and health outcomes seemed to be readily accepted and understood and there was a real momentum to continue the discussion in various forums.\u201d&nbsp;<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Population Matters was encouraged that representatives from UNFPA attended the discussion, and now working to connect with their data team to help improve future UN&#8217;s projections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The need for funding is ever critical<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One uncomfortable truth loomed over every conversation at CPD58 \u2014 even when it went unspoken. No matter how compelling the case or how strong the calls for action, progress on child health will stall without funding. And right now, funding is disappearing fast.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The opening session at CPD58 failed to acknowledge the unprecedented global shifts in aid cuts \u2013 that&nbsp;USAID, one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/2025\/02\/just-numbers-impact-us-international-family-planning-assistance-2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">largest global funders<\/a> of maternal and health services, had recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/stories\/2025\/03\/usaid-cut-threatens-global-health-and-other-top-health-stories\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">slashed its aid budget by 83%<\/a>. Then, other governments, including the UK and in Europe, swiftly took similar steps. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, Margaret Edison, Director of Population Management and Development at Nigeria\u2019s National Population Commission\u2014and a familiar face to Population Matters from our Nigerian Population Conversation\u2014broke the silence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Image-24-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16113\" style=\"object-fit:cover;width:350px;height:400px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Image-24-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Image-24-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Image-24-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Image-24.jpg 1284w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Population Matters&#8217; Josh Hill with Margaret Edison, Director of Population Management and Development at Nigeria\u2019s National Population Commission<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking during a Population Council side event, she addressed the reality head-on. &#8220;We need to resist depending on donors, start generating our own funding. Whoever owns funding has the right to withdraw it,&#8221; she said. She also highlighted the urgent need for her own government to show leadership: \u201cNigeria has the money,\u201d she said, \u201cbut it needs to be mobilised better.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Edison continued: &#8220;We need to get better at communicating the end results &#8211; [without family planning] women are dying, children&#8217;s health is worse.&#8221; Her words were a powerful reminder that the solutions we\u2019re advocating for need both political will and proper investment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Putting words into action<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>CPD58 has shown encouraging signs that the link between climate change, population dynamics and child health is being taken more seriously.
