In light of recent aid cuts, the work done by grassroots organisations- like our worldwide Empower to Plan partners- is more essential, and under threat, than ever.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This International Women\u2019s Day, the message was to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.internationalwomensday.com\/Theme\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Support the Supporters.<\/a> It provided a powerful reminder of the critical leadership of grassroots organisations in advancing women\u2019s rights and environmental sustainability. Population Matters\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/empower-to-plan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Empower to Plan<\/a> initiative works to strengthen women\u2019s leadership by supporting grassroots, women-led groups across the globe. These groups drive meaningful change through education, advocacy and sustainable development. Strengthening partnerships (both locally and globally) is one of Population Matters\u2019\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/resources\/population-matters-strategy-2025-2030\/#:~:text=2030%20%2D%20Population%20Matters-,Population%20Matters'%20Strategy%3A%202025%2D2030,leadership%2C%20global%20partnerships%20and%20advocacy.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">strategic goals.\u202f<\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The UN <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unwomen.org\/en\/articles\/in-focus\/69th-session-of-the-un-commission-on-the-status-of-women\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Commission on the Status of Women<\/a> (CSW) took place shortly after International Women\u2019s Day and focused on the landmark <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unwomen.org\/en\/digital-library\/publications\/2015\/01\/beijing-declaration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Beijing Declaration<\/a> on\u202fits 30<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary. The Beijing Declaration is one of the most progressive global frameworks in advancing gender equality. It reaffirms governments\u2019 commitment to strengthening&nbsp;women&#8217;s right to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unwomen.org\/en\/news\/in-focus\/csw59\/feature-stories#health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">health,<\/a> equality, and their role in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unwomen.org\/en\/news\/in-focus\/csw59\/feature-stories#environment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">environmental<\/a> leadership.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Aid cuts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>CSW talks were overshadowed by the\u202frecent aid budget cuts in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/feb\/27\/first-thing-trump-administration-to-cut-more-than-90-of-usaid-foreign-aid-contracts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">US<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/clyrkkv4gd7o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UK<\/a>, which are already having a direct<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global-development\/2025\/mar\/14\/aid-cuts-humanitarian-united-nations-usaid-trump-uk-malnutrition-starvation-deaths-wfp-fao-defence-spending\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> impact.<\/a> As we stated in our joint <a href=\"https:\/\/chrome-extension\/\/efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj\/https:\/\/www.bond.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Bond-Letter-to-the-PM-on-ODA-cuts-270225.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">letter<\/a> to Keir Starmer, the reduction in aid \u201c<em>will cost lives and significantly damage our [the UK&#8217;s] long-term interests.\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a consequence, organisations are now examining how to restructure around domestic resources, with foreign aid playing a smaller role.\u202f <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/global-health\/climate-and-people\/g20-south-africa-health-aid-trump-funding-cuts\/?msockid=3b0517cc9a6062141eaf024d9b586326\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Considerations<\/a> have included re-prioritising government spending and&nbsp;reviewing tax and social contributions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/matthew-tenbruggencate-0HJWobhGhJs-unsplash-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16020\" srcset=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/matthew-tenbruggencate-0HJWobhGhJs-unsplash-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/matthew-tenbruggencate-0HJWobhGhJs-unsplash-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/matthew-tenbruggencate-0HJWobhGhJs-unsplash-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/matthew-tenbruggencate-0HJWobhGhJs-unsplash-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/matthew-tenbruggencate-0HJWobhGhJs-unsplash-2048x1365.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Delegates in the UN headquarters in New York<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>THE ISSUES: WOMEN AND CLIMATE<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Women disproportionately bear the brunt of the impact of climate change \u2013 worldwide, they carry the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.worldbank.org\/en\/climatechange\/gender-smart-climate-finance-critical-progress-results-and-impact\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">main responsibility<\/a> for securing food, water and fuel. Agriculture is a <a href=\"https:\/\/eu.boell.org\/en\/PesticideAtlas-gender#:~:text=Women%20make%20up%2043%20percent,in%20agriculture%20is%20likely%20underestimated.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">major employer<\/a> of women globally. As a result, extreme weather conditions force girls to <a href=\"https:\/\/womendeliver.org\/investment\/invest-women-tackle-climate-change-conserve-environment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">leave school<\/a> to assist their families, further entrenching cycles of poverty and inequality. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The intersection of climate vulnerability and gender inequality is compounded by barriers to contraceptive access, family planning resources, and maternal healthcare. Together they restrict women\u2019s ability to decide their futures and adapt to climate shocks.\u202fIt is crucial that women have a say in climate policies since they are on the frontline of the\u202foutcomes.\u202f\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>Our goal is&nbsp;to continue bringing sexual and reproductive education to rural communities in more [nature reserve] buffer zones, to tackle the climate crisis one step at a time. We aim to raise awareness of the link between the increase in population and the decrease in natural resources and habitats of threatened species, as well as the importance of women\u2019s actions in relation to the conservation of the environment&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<cite>Sara Lara, Women for Conservation<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Not only is inclusion crucial from a human rights perspective, but it also makes economic sense. <a href=\"https:\/\/unfccc.int\/news\/five-reasons-why-climate-action-needs-women#:~:text=Reason%202%3A%20Empowering%20women%20means%20better%20climate%20solutions&amp;text=This%20boost%20in%20productivity%20not,positive%20impact%20on%20climate%20adaptation.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Evidence shows<\/a> that: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Enabling\u202fwomen\u2019s leadership has led to better climate solutions, and when women have the same agricultural resources as men, yields increase by up to 30%.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>TACKLING MISOGYNY&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMisogyny is on the rise, and so, violence and discrimination,\u201d warned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unwomen.org\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UN Women<\/a> Executive Director <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sg\/en\/content\/profiles\/sima-bahous?_gl=1*1ti1gby*_ga*MTg3NTYzMDk1LjE3NDEzMzkyNjM.*_ga_TK9BQL5X7Z*MTc0MjIwNDg4Ny45LjEuMTc0MjIwNzIxNi4wLjAuMA..*_ga_S5EKZKSB78*MTc0MjIwNDg4Ny45LjEuMTc0MjIwNzIxOS4xMS4wLjA.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sima Bahous<\/a> in her opening address. This powerful statement set the tone for a key theme of this year&#8217;s CSW: confronting the alarming rise of misogyny. Recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unwomen.org\/en\/news-stories\/press-release\/2025\/03\/one-in-four-countries-report-backlash-on-womens-rights-in-2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reports<\/a> indicate that nearly one-quarter of governments worldwide observed a backlash on women\u2019s rights in their countries, including discrimination, weaker legal protections and less funding for programmes. One potential driver of this is resistance to the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2025\/03\/1160876\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">progress women have made<\/a> in education and leadership, which have been key factors in breaking cycles of inequality.\u202f\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Showcasing the importance of <a href=\"https:\/\/unglobalcompact.org\/journal\/what-expect-csw69-key-themes-and-business-leadership-insights\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">male allyship<\/a> was proposed as a crucial antidote to countering these regressive trends. \u201c<em>We need to present young men and boys with&#8230; a redefinition of masculinity that prioritises partnership over domination, liberation over oppression and shared humanity over rigid hierarchies.\u201d<\/em> urged\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/top30under30.acgc.ca\/project\/ahdithya-visweswaran\/%22%20\/t%20%22_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ahdithya Viseweswaran<\/a>, coordinator of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youngdiplomats.ca\/%22%20\/t%20%22_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Young Diplomats of Canada<\/a>,&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The importance of engaging boys and men in taking responsibility for advancing gender equality has been demonstrated by our partner <a href=\"https:\/\/dandelionafrica.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dandelion Africa.<\/a> Through involving local men, they fostered a sense of shared responsibility and collective action. I call upon everyone (individuals, fellow activists, CSOs, Governments and all relevant stakeholders) to join and redouble efforts\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<cite>Joan Kembabazi, Founder of Gufasha Girls&nbsp;<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Across the world, funding cuts to SRHR programmes will reverse progress on gender equality and reproductive rights. These cuts <a href=\"https:\/\/reliefweb.int\/report\/world\/amid-aid-cuts-renewed-us-policy-increases-health-risks-women-and-girls-conflict-areas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">disproportionately impact<\/a> grassroots organisations\u202fand are\u202fparticularly felt by marginalised communities and those living in poverty. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many organisations support people who have faced historic discrimination and have a lack of access to essential health services, including contraception, maternal healthcare, and gender-based violence support. This leaves many women without access to vital services that enable them to make informed decisions about their bodies and lives. \u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our new <a href=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/resources\/population-matters-strategy-2025-2030\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">five-year strategy<\/a> prioritises equitable partnerships with grassroots groups. We recognise that lasting change comes from the leadership of communities directly affected by the issues. \u202fTime and again, we\u2019ve seen that when women are able to exercise their human rights \u2013 to education, health and equality- they make informed choices about their futures. Among these decisions are if and when they want children and the number and spacing of the children. This leads to better <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC2096669\/#:~:text=The%20reduction%20in%20child-bearing,mortality%20and%20other%20pregnancy%20complications.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">health outcomes<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unwomen.org\/en\/what-we-do\/economic-empowerment\/facts-and-figures\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">economic stability, <\/a>and reduced environmental strain. These not only improve women&#8217;s lives but benefit their families, communities, and the environment.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While\u202fEmpower to Plan still operates on a relatively small scale, it has a profound impact. By working alongside grassroots organisations, we are collectively ensuring that resources reach those driving change in their own communities. We will continue strengthening these partnerships and deepening collaboration with grassroots and community-led movements.
