Read part two of our deep dive into the new administration, as we look at those pronatalists closest to Trump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Read\u00a0<em>The Faces of US Pronatalism And the War on Women\u2019s Rights &#8211; Part One<\/em>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/news\/2025\/01\/the-faces-of-u-s-pronatalism-and-the-war-on-womens-rights-part-one\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>JD Vance<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Vice President JD Vance identifies himself as a \u201cpro-family\u201d politician.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, Vance\u2019s \u201cpro-family\u201d views might be better understood as \u201cbig family\u201d values, with a fixed pronatalist outlook to encourage Americans to have more babies. He has also suggested people <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/vance-argued-higher-tax-rate-childless-americans-2021\/story?id=112284318\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">without children should pay higher taxes<\/a> than those who have children. Vance went viral last year for his comments criticising \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/eu.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/elections\/2024\/07\/27\/jd-vance-childless-cat-ladies-backlash\/74541493007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">childless cat ladies\u2019<\/a>. And he has claimed that people without children \u2018do not have a stake in the future\u2019.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Previously, Vance has also expressed support for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/us-politics\/jd-vance-abortion-ban-fact-check-debate-vp-b2622426.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">total national abortion ban.<\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vance has been credited with popularising pronatalism into the mainstream US discourse. He has aligned himself with other pronatalist politicians such as the Hungarian Prime Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/o\/hWK7j\/https:\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2022\/07\/04\/does-hungary-offer-a-glimpse-of-our-authoritarian-future\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Viktor Orb\u00e1n<\/a>, with his drive to raise Hungary\u2019s birth rate.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Elon Musk&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Since at least 2017, Elon Musk has been using Twitter\/X to promote misinformation about population, including the idea of an impending \u2018population collapse.\u2019 In 2022, <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2022\/08\/30\/health\/elon-musk-population-collapse-wellness\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Musk posted on X<\/a>, that \u201cpopulation collapse due to low birth rates is a much bigger risk to civilization than global warming.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A wholly inaccurate statement that has been disproved by demographers and climate scientists alike. However, it\u2019s clear that Musk has significant influence not only amongst his millions of followers but also in receiving widespread media attention.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Musk frequently\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/populationconnection.org\/blog\/dear-mr-musk-youre-wrong-about-population\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">makes headlines<\/a>\u202fwith his statements about low birth rates. But he isn\u2019t just commenting on the issue, he has also funded research to support his inaccurate claims.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1280\" src=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/musk_NVIDIA-Corporation_CC-BY-NC-ND-2.0.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4567\" srcset=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/musk_NVIDIA-Corporation_CC-BY-NC-ND-2.0.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/musk_NVIDIA-Corporation_CC-BY-NC-ND-2.0-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/musk_NVIDIA-Corporation_CC-BY-NC-ND-2.0-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/musk_NVIDIA-Corporation_CC-BY-NC-ND-2.0-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/musk_NVIDIA-Corporation_CC-BY-NC-ND-2.0-1536x1024.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Musk&#8217;s Research<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-08-14\/elon-musk-s-10m-texas-donation-funds-a-favorite-topic-of-his-fertility\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bloomberg investigation<\/a>\u202frevealed that in 2021, he donated $10 million to the\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/sites.utexas.edu\/pwi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Population Wellbeing Initiative<\/a>\u202f(PWI), an organisation dedicated to researching solutions to combat low birth rates. Some of the PWI\u2019s research was published in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2023\/09\/18\/opinion\/human-population-global-growth.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">opinion piece in the New York Times last year.<\/a> The article features a graphic, which depicts a falsely alarming steep population drop-off after a peak of 10 billion in 2085. Whilst <a href=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/news\/2024\/07\/the-road-to-10-billion-world-population-projections-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">current UN projections<\/a> do predict that the human population will peak before the end of this century, it\u2019s expected to plateau and then gradually decline.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Musk, who\u2019s fathered at least 12 children, has called UN projections of population growth \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/o\/HmAKN\/https:\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1483485798548840450?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">utter nonsense<\/a>\u201d in the past. He has positioned himself within President Trump\u2019s inner circle, therefore it\u2019s concerning how far Musk will use his influence to continue to spread misinformation about population.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For billionaires like Elon Musk, their support for the pronatalist movement encompasses the push for <a href=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/news\/2024\/09\/endless-economic-growth-unsustainable-for-planet-and-people\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">infinite growth<\/a>. For Musk, more people mean more future workers, more wealth, more space exploration, and a continuation of the business-as-usual economic model that favours the rich.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year, Population Matters conducted a <a href=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/news\/2024\/09\/redistribute-resources-eliminate-waste-circular-economy-part-one\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">project examining alternative economic models<\/a> to explore how we could break out of this growth-focused paradigm, to find economic models that work better for people and the planet.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Final Thoughts&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The election of Donald Trump to the presidency and rise of other pronatalist figures to prominent positions of power is a cause for concern that we must all be vigilant to, especially as it poses a fundamental threat to women\u2019s reproductive rights.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Population Matters will be working hard with our partners over the next four years to support communities worldwide to ensure continued access to family planning and to protect reproductive rights through legally binding measures immune to the whims of hostile forces.
