We\u2019ve welcomed our new CEO, Amy Jankiewicz, and held the successful Nigerian Population Conversation, which is reflected in the amount of media coverage we received in the last 12 months. Here we look at some of the articles and comment pieces featuring Population Matters in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>An International Start to the Year<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In February we held our Population Conversation roundtable event with our local partner, &nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cislac.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre<\/a>&nbsp;(CISLAC).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event hosted in Nigeria\u2019s capital, Abuja, drew more than 90 people composing activists, experts, and journalists to discuss rapid population growth \u2013 one of Nigeria\u2019s greatest challenges. It was in response to the article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/article\/the-times-view-on-britains-falling-birthrate-baby-bust-kl8c9x5ck\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>View on Britain\u2019s falling birthrate: Baby Bust<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>Sir, Britain\u2019s fertility rate may be falling but our population is still growing: the Office for National Statistics predicts us to hit 70 million in 2026. Even if there were a rapid rise in birthrates now, there would still be at least a two-decade lag before these potential workers\u2019 taxes were able to fund our social services. The UK is a rich country that can utilise its skilled workforce and adapt to the reality of an ageing population. And as your report suggests, migration could also play a role in our future workforce. The Lancet\u2019s prediction of a low-fertility future should be viewed as a positive sign of increased equality, meaning that many women are able to choose to have fewer children, pursue higher education and careers.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<cite>Madeleine Hewitt,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/comment\/letters-to-editor\/article\/times-letters-compensating-women-for-rising-pension-age-cqqxcsrgp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> The Times<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>In June, pronatalist advocate Paul Morland released his new book, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/culture\/books\/article\/no-one-left-paul-morland-review-n5wl28tpz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">No One Left: Why The World Needs More Babies.<\/a><\/em> Following a piece published by The Times discussing Morland\u2019s arguments, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/uk\/science\/article\/our-future-depends-on-us-having-plenty-of-children-gh9d8wsk6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u2018Our future depends on us having plenty of children,\u2019<\/a> the article sought balance with a quote from our CEO Amy Jankiewicz who was able to provide a rebuttal to Morland\u2019s arguments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>The UK needs to be leading by example in not encouraging pronatalism. We\u2019ve got to look at population on a global scale. All populations matter and we\u2019ve got to consider the impact on the natural world<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<cite>Amy Jankiewicz,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/uk\/science\/article\/our-future-depends-on-us-having-plenty-of-children-gh9d8wsk6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> The Times<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Debunking Pronatalist Claims<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In May, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/lifeandstyle\/article\/2024\/may\/25\/american-pronatalists-malcolm-and-simone-collins\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">profile piece was published in The Guardian<\/a> on the pronatalist advocates Simone and Malcoln Collins. We had a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/article\/2024\/may\/31\/pronatalists-are-conveniently-ignoring-earths-real-problems\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">letter published <\/a>in response to the article by Campaigns and Media Officer Madeleine Hewitt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>Pronatalists like the Collinses, interviewed for your article (<strong>America\u2019s premier pronatalists on having \u2018tons of kids\u2019 to save the world: \u2018There are going to be countries of old people starving to death\u2019, 25 May<\/strong>), emphasise their authority on the \u201cdata\u201d, but their cherrypicked results neglect to look at the full picture that humanity\u2019s outsized impact is degrading the natural resources upon which we all depend.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The Global Footprint Network says we are in ecological overshoot, with humanity using the resources of&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/overshoot.footprintnetwork.org\/how-many-earths-or-countries-do-we-need\/\"><em>1.7 Earths<\/em><\/a><em>. The UN has made clear that our unsustainable demand for resources is driving the triple planetary crisis: climate change, biodiversity loss, and increasing levels of pollution and waste. And despite the rhetoric of Silicon Valley, technology is not our saviour; it is found to&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/wedocs.unep.org\/bitstream\/handle\/20.500.11822\/44902\/GRO24_Summary_for_Policymakers.pdf?sequence=3\"><em>mitigate global extraction by only 5%<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>It\u2019s time pronatalists recognised that nothing in nature exists independently. The impacts of climate change are already endangering millions of lives, yet they ignore the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change\u2019s\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Population%20Matters%20Climate%20Change%20Briefing%20-%20July%202022.pdf\"><em>data<\/em><\/a><em>\u00a0citing population growth and per capita consumption as the biggest drivers of emissions. The environmental crises cannot be ignored when their effects shape our world; instead we must act now to rein in our resource demand to solve these interconnected crises.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n<cite>Madeleine Hewitt, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/article\/2024\/may\/31\/pronatalists-are-conveniently-ignoring-earths-real-problems\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Guardian<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"728\" src=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/GFN-1.7-earths-graphic.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10319\" srcset=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/GFN-1.7-earths-graphic.png 1024w, https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/GFN-1.7-earths-graphic-300x213.png 300w, https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/GFN-1.7-earths-graphic-768x546.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Later in the year, Madeleine also spoke to the team from the advocacy group <a href=\"https:\/\/hopenothate.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hope Not Hate<\/a> and contributed some of Population Matter\u2019s own research to their in-depth investigation <a href=\"https:\/\/investigations.hopenothate.org.uk\/inside-pronatalism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Inside Pronatalism<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We also received <a href=\"https:\/\/eu.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/elections\/2024\/10\/06\/jd-vance-childless-cat-ladies-pronatalism\/75474167007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">coverage in USA Today<\/a> with our <em><a href=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/gilead-watch-protect-womens-rights-from-pronatal-politicians\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gilead Watch<\/a><\/em> report cited as evidence of the dangers of pronatalism in response to the viral \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/news\/2024\/08\/progressives-should-steer-clear-of-pronatalism-trap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">childless cat ladies<\/a>\u201d comments made by Vice President-elect JD Vance. In response to Vance\u2019s comments we also wrote to The New York Times and you can read a copy of the unpublished letter <a href=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/news\/2024\/08\/progressives-should-steer-clear-of-pronatalism-trap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Voice in The Independent<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>On 11 July the world marked <a href=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/news\/2024\/07\/world-population-day-inspiring-changemakers-and-10-3-billion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">World Population Day<\/a> and the United Nations released their latest population projections. They predict that the world will <a href=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/news\/2024\/07\/the-road-to-10-billion-world-population-projections-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reach a population of 10 billion in the next 40 years.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following this there was a lot of media attention placed upon the UK\u2019s low birth rate and ageing population. In response, our CEO Amy Jankiewicz provided a comment piece for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/voices\/world-population-day-women-pronatalism-babies-b2577965.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Independent.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>However, on the day that the United Nations has predicted that the perilous growth of the world population will mean it will reach 10 billion by 2061 (July 11 is\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/eur02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.un.org%2Fen%2Fobservances%2Fworld-population-day&amp;data=05%7C02%7CPaul.Clements%40independent.co.uk%7Cfbd69e15f70b4dc7f17008dca18ade86%7C0f3a4c644dc54a768d4152d85ca158a5%7C0%7C0%7C638562865027006822%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=aHw5d0ogSLh93Up6w1XKH1nS4k%2BHedfjttOGlsOj6z8%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>World Population Day<\/em><\/a><em>), there is a growing movement in the UK calling for pronatalism \u2013 the belief that the world needs more children. Surely we all know that we are already consuming more resources than the planet can sustain? We are already living way beyond our means. We know we are tipping the world over into irreversible climate change \u2013 which in turn erodes fertile soil, meaning more people must scrabble for more resources from diminishing land and water sources. We know we are killing off animal species at a dizzying rate. We are felling our\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/eur02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.independent.co.uk%2Fclimate-change%2Fnews%2Famazon-tropical-forest-loss-drought-b2502814.html&amp;data=05%7C02%7CPaul.Clements%40independent.co.uk%7Cfbd69e15f70b4dc7f17008dca18ade86%7C0f3a4c644dc54a768d4152d85ca158a5%7C0%7C0%7C638562865027013790%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=o8eMwnvK4b8e3pbMFObP%2FvuPW3HjHDj4B3r3UhKNY8c%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>rainforests<\/em><\/a><em>, pumping oil and digging up and burning more coal in a frenzy to try to satisfy our increasingly voracious appetites for consumables.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<cite>Amy Jankiewicz, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/voices\/world-population-day-women-pronatalism-babies-b2577965.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Independent<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The piece once again emphasised the dangers of adopting a pronatalist agenda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>Pronatalism is a simplistic, misguided, sexist, racist and entirely irrational answer to the wrong question. The\u00a0reductio ad absurdum\u00a0of this philosophy is that we must destroy the planet (with more and more people) to save it.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Quoted in The Guardian<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In November, Amy was again quoted in an article in The Guardian, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2024\/nov\/02\/the-global-fertility-crisis-are-fewer-babies-a-good-or-a-bad-thing-experts-are-divided\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>The global fertility crisis: are fewer babies a good or a bad thing? Experts are divided<\/em><\/a>. She led with a benefit of a lower birth rate in the UK in a rebuttal against pronatalist advocate Paul Morland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>The World Wildlife Fund says that we\u2019ve lost 73% of our wildlife population in the last 50 years,\u201d The plunging fertility rate, she says, is \u201ccause for celebration\u201d.
